She had already decided on her goal for Pikes Peak 2019 immediately after her hill climb in 2018: „Under 10 minutes!“ This year, the hill-climbing crème de la crème gathered in Colorado for the 97th event. And Lucy Glöckner kept her word. With a magnificent victory on her modified BMW S 1000 R in the Exhibition Powersports Division last Sunday, she broke through the magical 10-minute mark with a time of 9:58.878 minutes. In so doing, she entered the ranks of around half a dozen men who have previously conquered the mountain in under 10 minutes – she is also the first woman ever to beat this legendary time! She finished an outstanding second in the overall classification, just behind Renny Scaysbrook on an Aprilia, an absolute Pikes Peak specialist. The race was, however, overshadowed by a tragic accident. Four-time Pikes Peak overall winner in the Motorcycle Division, Carlin Dunn on a Ducati, crashed from a promising position close to the finish and later succumbed to his injuries.
Lucy Glöckner, who always prepares professionally for her races, is one of the fastest women on two wheels worldwide. Last year, she had already become very familiar with the conditions in Colorado and was named „Rookie of the Year“. With her outstanding time, she confidently and single-handedly flew the flag for the Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO team as her team partner, road racing legend Michael Dunlop, was unable to compete due to injury.
„Once again this year, Lucy was very fast right from the start,“ said Wunderlich CEO MOTORSPORT Manager Frank Hoffmann. „She again demonstrated her great mental strength and, in the most demanding of all classes, the Exhibition Powersport Division, she rocked the Pikes Peak in the truest sense of the word. This year‘s event on Pikes Peak was marked by ups and downs. The injury-induced withdrawal of Michael Dunlop during the final preparations for the hill climb was a sobering blow. However, Lucy more than made up for this setback – she reliably delivered a top performance and achieved our best ever result as a team here in Colorado. We share her delight with this fantastic victory that underlines the performance and potential of our team, and shows that we have significantly improved over the last three years! Nevertheless, we cannot truly enjoy our success in light of the tragic events that have affected all of us. We are motorsport racers, sportspeople. We know about the huge challenges here at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Therefore, our thoughts are with Carlin Dunn, who has undoubtedly been one of the greats here at Pikes Peak and will now be sorely missed.“
We have been informed by the management of Michael Dunlop that Michael was seriously injured in a momentous racing accident last Saturday at the Donegal International Rally. Here is the official statement of his management MD Racing:
“Michael and his navigator where involved in a high speed accident. The accident accrued midday on Saturday 22nd of June at Donegal international rally where both parties sustained a heavily impacted crash no fault of either. Which for most accrued Michael with some heavy injuries which will leave him out of action for 2 weeks. A further update of his condition will be made in the near future
Frank Hoffmann, Wunderlich Managing Director and Manager of Wunderlich MOTORSPORT, in a first statement: „We, I also speak on behalf of Uwe Reinhard from ProKASRO, wish Michael the best and a quick and complete recovery. As a result of the regrettable events, we would like to inform you that Michael Dunlop‘s participation in this year‘s Pikes Peak International Hillclimb (PPIHC) is definitely out of the question. We regret this because we have had high hopes in his skills and talent! It is important now that he will be completely recovered!“
Hoffmann continues: „Now Lucy Glöckner will be holding up the flag of Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO this weekend at Pikes Peak in the „Race to the Clouds“ alone. She is excellent and professionally prepared and looking forward to the event. Last year, she has already captured the hearts of the American crowd and has been named „Rookie of the Year“.
Michael Dunlop had been registered by Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO for the PPIHC 2019 as a rider on a BMW S 1000 R in the Heavyweight-class.
News like a drumroll! Uwe Reinhardt, CEO of the global market leader for drain robotics and the successful ERC (Equipe Reinhardt Competition) EWC team got together last year with Frank Hoffmann, CEO of Wunderlich: They nominated Team Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO as their team for the Pikes Peak race.
Until now the pair had announced that they were not intending to participate in the legendary „Race to the Clouds“ in Colorado this year. But now they have abandoned their reserved stance. Uwe Reinhardt was able to get Michael Dunlop, an absolute top rider with an international reputation, on the team so now it‘s official: Now there‘s no more stopping Michael Dunlop and Lucy Glöckner, who was feted as a rookie last year; this year they will attack the legendary mountain in the heavyweight division with Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO!
Not much needs to be said about Michael Dunlop (29): He comes from a dynasty of big name Irish racers who have played a big part in the TT on the Isle of Man and the highly popular road races in Great Britain for decades. Michael Dunlop alone has won eighteen races in numerous TT classes as well as many other in the Northwest 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix. He achieved notoriety and great recognition in Germany after his famous 2014 victory on the the BMW S 1000 RR in the Superbike class of the TT. This was the German brand‘s first victory, exactly 75 years after Schorsch Meier won the prized Senior Trophy 1939 on the compressor BMW.
„We‘re massively pleased that we were able to win over Michael, who is a thoroughly passionate, characterful, exceptional rider and human being, it‘s fantastic for our team. The Americans now know who we are as a team. The American race organisation, Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, was hugely enthusiastic when we signed Michael up. Everywhere he goes in the world he‘s preceded by an incredible reputation that brings great respect with it. We‘re very happy and are extremely motivated“, says Frank Hoffmann.
Lucy Glöckner (28), who is one of the fastest women in the world tackles the Endurance Long Distance Champion on an RR, is once again on board. She was incredibly successful from the start in 2018 as „Rookie of the Year“ and has rightly earned her first spurs with 5th place in the Heavyweight Class 2018. She thus enjoys great recognition as a public favourite, especially with American race visitors.
Reinhardt and Hoffman are now stepping on the gas to form the team and engineer all the organisational matters. Just like last year, Wunderlich MOTORSPORT powered by ProKASRO will be making its appearance on two competitively prepared BMW S 1000 Rs.
„We successfully competed in the Pikes Peak race for the first time in 2017 completely impartially with our Wunderlich R 1200 R“, adds Hoffmann, „and in 2018 we were able to significantly increase our performance together with Uwe Reinhardt and ProKasro with the S 1000 R. The continuous, positive development is noticeable and we see a lot of potential together. That‘s why we are looking at what lies ahead of us with real expectation and optimism. We‘re looking forward to the race on 30 June 2019 and to the American public, as we already feel a bit at home in Colorado.“
