Wunderlich Cylinder Head Protector – the precise, comprehensive addition to the original engine protection bar
Stone chips, branches, rocky edges, a drop while off-roading – or worse, a fall – can easily damage the thin-walled valve covers of the 1300 ShiftCam boxer engine, even when the original engine protection bar and filler plate are installed. Scratches are the least of your worries. For the ShiftCam engines, it's important to remember that the design of the ShiftCam valve train is highly complex, making it worthwhile to proactively protect the cylinder head. As the exposed valve covers are only mounted by friction, there’s a risk they may shift relative to the cylinder head during any impact, potentially affecting the delicate valve train. That’s why additional protection of the cylinder head is so important – especially under heavy use, as the ShiftCam heads are among the most expensive components of the GS.
That’s why our designers’ brief specified that the Wunderlich cylinder head protector must be robustly dimensioned and particularly strong to reduce the risk of damage to the cylinder heads. Our reinforced version replaces the original filler plate and mounts directly to the existing mounting points on the original engine protection bar. Together, this setup provides additional structural stability.
Installation of the protector system, made of high-grade aluminium alloy, is straightforward and easily accessible on the original engine protection bar. With 4 mm material thickness, a form-fitting, immovable mount, and robust screws – these are the hallmarks of a tough and resilient construction, effectively a protective shield. The prominent ventilation cut-outs serve airflow purposes, and their distinctive dynamic form, tapering towards the rear, integrates seamlessly into the design concept. All of this combines into a thoroughly thought-out and – quite literally – comprehensive protection concept for the sensitive cylinder heads. We offer the cylinder head protector in either aluminium or black anodised finish.
